Call for Applications for Kyoto Writers Residency 2023

Kyoto Writers Residency invites fiction writers and poets around the world to submit their applications for our second annual fall residency in 2023.

During the residency, participants will stay in the city of Kyoto with other fellow writers and translators, are given time and space to concentrate on their writing, and attend two official events. We do not either impose any theme on their writing or require completion of work during the period.

I. Eligibility:

• Fiction writers and/or poets of any language(s) with at least one full-length book publication are eligible.
• The applicants must be able to participate in the residency and its official events in full.
• Basic communication skills in either English or Japanese will be required.
• We encourage the applicants to provide proposals for outreach events other than the two official events.
• Writers who live in Japan and write in other languages are welcome to apply.

II. Positions Available:

• 1 position for a Japanese language writer
• 1 or 2 position(s) for writer(s) of other language(s)

III. Residency will provide:

• A single hotel room in the City of Kyoto during the duration of the residency
• A writing space (e.g. a co-working space) in the City of Kyoto
• A round trip ticket from the nearby international airport to Osaka and the ground transport from Osaka to Kyoto (For writers living in Japan, the transportation from their address in Japan to Kyoto)
• ¥5,000 per diem
• Other means of non-monetary support from the Residency committee members and the staff

IV. 2023 Residency Schedule:

• The residents will check in on Saturday, September 30^th, and check out on Sunday, October 22^nd.
• Two main official events: The Opening Talk Session (Sunday, October 1^st) & The Closing Reading (Saturday, October 21^st)

V. Application and fee:

(1) Please submit your entry form first from < https://forms.gle/hetKsUdFBsyqwWVy5>.

(2) We will send PayPal payment information to your PayPal e-mail address.

(3) An application fee of ¥2,000 must be paid through PayPal before you submit your other application materials.

(4) E-mail the following application materials in .pdf, .doc, or .docx formats to kyotowritersresidency<at>gmail.com. Your e-mail’s subject title has to be “2023 Kyoto Writers Residency Application”.

1. A copy of your PayPal payment receipt
2. BIO（No more than 2 pages in A4/Letter size, in English or Japanese）
3. Description of yourself and your current project (No more than 2 pages in A4/Letter size, in English or Japanese）
4. Sample work（No more than 30 pages of fiction in A4/Letter size OR between 5 to 10 pieces of poetry; We accept submissions in any language(s). Creative nonfiction writers are not eligible.）
5. English or Japanese translation of your sample work (if available). （This is optional.）

VI. Deadline

All the application materials must be submitted before 23:59 (Japan Time) on Saturday, April 15, 2023.

VII. Selection Process and Announcement:

• A board of specialists will assess applications and select the participants. We plan to notify the applicants of the results in mid-May.
• Some applicants may be invited to an online interview.
• We will not accept any inquiries about the results of the selection.

VIII. Notifications:

1. Participants from overseas are required to purchase travel insurance on their own and provide a copy of the insurance policy to the residency committee before leaving their country.
2. Kyoto Writers Residency will not provide any material or monetary support other than the ones stated in Section III.
3. The participants will be asked to sign an agreement. The participants are responsible for any unexpected accidents or incidents during the residency.
4. The participants are responsible to do their preparations for their creative writing and research.
5. Kyoto Writers Residency will ask the participants to provide written feedback after the residency period.
6. If you require any special arrangements for your residency, please contact us beforehand. The support described in Section III is awarded to the selected author only.

2023年度京都文学レジデンシー　応募要領

京都文学レジデンシーでは、異なる文化に触れることで新しい文学表現を生み出そうとする国内外の小説家や詩人など創作作家や翻訳家を支援するレジデンスプログラムを2022年から実施しています。

2023年のレジデンスプログラムを以下のとおり実施するので、応募を希望される方は、応募料2,000円を支払い、エントリーシートの全ての項目を記入のうえ、添付書類とともに応募受付期間内に送付先にメールでお送りください。

１.　応募資格

• 小説家、詩人等の創作作家で、単著の出版が少なくとも1冊あること
• 期間中の「4 実施日程」に掲げる日程で滞在・イベント参加できる方
• 英語または日本語で意志の疎通ができる方
• ※　期間内での創作物の完成は必須ではありません。
• ※　滞在期間中に市民交流ワークショップなどを行うことを歓迎します。

２.　募集人数

• 日本語作家　→　１名
• 諸国語作家　→　１～２名（日本国内在住の方も対象です）

３.　支援内容

• 滞在期間中の宿泊場所（京都市内のホテル）の提供
• 執筆のためのスペース（京都市内のコワーキングスペースなど）の提供
• 居住地から京都までの旅費
• 日当5,000円
• 京都文学レジデンシーメンバーによるサポート

４.　実施日程

• 滞在期間　 9/30（土）～10/22（22泊23日）
• 主な日程　 9/30 (土) チェックイン
• 10/ 1 (日) オープニングイベント（トークセッションを予定）
• 10/21 (土) クロージングイベント（朗読会を予定）
• 10/22 (日) チェックアウト

５.　応募方法

(2) 郵便振替もしくはPayPalにて応募料2,000円をお支払いください。

７.　選考と結果

• 専門家で構成する選考委員会で決定し、応募者にメールで通知します（2022年5月上旬予定）。
• 必要に応じてオンライン面接を行います。
• 選考についての問合せは受け付けておりません。

８.　注意事項

• 食費、原稿料、アーティストフィー、その他生活に要する諸費用は支給しません。
• 海外からの参加者は自己負担による旅行保険加入が必須となります。
• 参加にあたっては承諾書に署名いただきます。滞在期間中の事故・病気など、不測の事態が起こった場合、参加者の責任によるものとします。
• 創作及び調査研究などに必要なものは各自で用意してください。
• 滞在創作終了後、レポートを提出していただきます。
• 参加にあたって滞在条件の調整が必要な場合、諸懸案事項がある場合は、必ず事前にご相談ください。なお、支援内容は申請者にのみ適用されます。
