A: Writers from any country are welcome to apply.

Q: Does e-Book only publication count as a “single-authored publication”?
電子書籍出版のみの場合も「単著の出版」とみなされますか？
A: E-Book only publication does not count.
電子書籍出版のみの場合は、単著の出版とはみなしません。
Q: Does the eligibility requirement for a "single-authored full-length book publication" mean that the publication must be a full-length work? Are self-published works with short stories considered solo publications?
応募資格の「単著の出版」は、長編小説のことですか。たとえば自費出版の短編集は単著の出版と見なされますか。
A: We don’t question whether the book is a novel or a collection, OR whetehr the book was self-published or commercially published if it is a single-authored book.
一冊の本であるかぎり、長編・短編集を問いません。単著が自費出版か商業的な出版かどうかも問いません。
Q: Regarding the eligibility requirement for a "single-authored publication", does it have to be in English? Can it be in other languages?
応募資格の「単著の出版」は、英語による出版である必要がありますか。他の言語による単著でもよいですか。
A: Single-authored works may be in any language. However, please note that if the work you are attaching to your application is in a language other than English, it must be accompanied by an English or Japanese translation.
単著は何語でもかまいません。ただし、応募書類に添付する作品が英語以外の言語によるものである場合は、英訳もしくは和訳を添える必要がありますのでご注意ください。
Q: I have a book that contains work by two authors, including myself. Can it be counted as a single author?
自分を含む2人の作家の作品が掲載されている著作は単著にカウントできますか。
A: The book must be single authored. Anthologies do not count.
単著である必要があります。アンソロジーはカウントできません。
Q: I am currently writing a novel, but my only published works are non-fiction. Can I apply if I have not already published a novel?
現在、小説を執筆していますが、出版済の単著はノンフィクション作品だけです。小説の単著がすでに出版されていないと応募できませんか。
A: You are eligible to apply but your sample writing in the application must be a work of fiction (or poetry). It can be a short story or a part of your ongoing novel project.
応募はできますが、応募時に提出するサンプルライティングは、必ずフィクション作品または詩を提出してください。ショートストーリーや、執筆中の小説の一部でもかまいません。
Q: I haven't published a single-authored book, but I have a history of similar activities, such as translating novels, winning awards, and hosting readings. Can I apply?
単著の出版はありませんが、小説の翻訳、授賞、朗読会の開催等、同等の活動歴はあります。応募できますか。
A: One or more single-authored book publication(s) is required to apply.
応募資格に定めているので、単著の出版歴がなければ応募できません。
Q: I am an author of fiction works and children's books. Can I apply?
フィクション作品と児童書の作家です。応募できますか。
A: You are eligible to apply if you have a single-authored book published. The books can be a children’s book.
単著の出版歴があれば応募できます。単著は児童書でも構いません。
Q: Can fiction film screenwriters and playwrights apply?
映画の脚本家や劇作家は応募できますか。
A: Kyoto Writers Residency is for fiction writers and poets. By fiction, we mean short stories, novel and/or stage play, and we do not accept film script submission.
京都文学レジデンシーは、作家と詩人を対象としています。ショートストーリー、小説、戯曲は受け付けていますが、映像作品の脚本家の応募は受け付けていません。
Q: Can translators apply? If my solo published work is a translation, do I need to apply as a translator rather than as a writer?
翻訳家は応募できますか。単著の出版歴が翻訳によるものだった場合、作家としてではなく、翻訳家として応募する必要がありますか。
A: We invite one translator from the Japanese language every year. This is by invitation only, and the open application competition is for poets and writers from around the world. You can be a translator, but you must have a book of fiction or poetry published.
京都文学レジデンシーには毎年、日本文学の翻訳者が1人参加していますが、翻訳家は招待制で公募はしていません。公募では詩人や作家を対象としています。翻訳家でも応募できますが、小説か詩集を出版している必要があります。
Q: Does the sample work need to be published? Can I apply if I am in the process of writing a work in progress?
サンプルワークは出版済みのものである必要がありますか。制作中のものでもよいですか。
A: The sample piece does not have to be a published piece. You have to be a published author to be qualified to apply, but your sample piece can be any work you choose to submit.
応募資格があるのは単著のある方のみですが、サンプルワークは出版済みのものである必要はありません。
On Multiple Submissions 併願応募について
Q: May I apply for other programs that take place in the same period?
同時期に行われる別のプログラムとの併願はできますか。
A: You are free to apply for other programs, but you cannot participate in two programs at the same time. You will have to withdraw from our program if you choose to participate in another program. We appreciate your early notification.
応募していただいて結構ですが、他プログラムに参加が決まった場合は、京都文学レジデンシー参加は辞退となります。早めに連絡をお願いします。
On Entry Fees 審査料について
Q: Shopify does not support payments from my country, so I cannot pay the entry fee.
Shopifyは私が拠点とする国からの支払いに対応していないため、審査料の支払いができません。
A: Please contact us individually and we will provide you with other payment methods.

On Online Entry Form and Application Materials オンラインエントリーフォームと応募書類について
Q: There is a question about "an outreach event" in the online entry form. What do you expect from writers for outreach event proposals other than official events? What should I prepare?
オンラインフォームにある公式イベント以外のアウトリーチイベントのプロポーザルとは、作家に何を期待していますか。何を準備するべきですか。
A: Proposals are totally optional. We often work with local bookstores and universities for smaller events. If writers have any specific outreach projects they have in mind, they are encouraged to share the plans.
アウトリーチイベントの提案は完全にオプションです。地元の書店や大学と協力して小規模なイベントを行うことなどがあります。作家が特定のアウトリーチ プロジェクトを考えているなら、ぜひその計画を共有してください。
Q: In the "Description of your current project" section, should I write about the novel or poem I am currently writing? Or should I write about the outreach event proposal?
応募書類の「自己紹介と現在のプロジェクト」には、執筆中の小説や詩について書けばよいですか。または、アウトリーチイベントのプロポーザルを書けばよいですか。
A: In the "Description of your current project" section, be sure to write about your own creative writing project. Proposals for outreach events in the online entry form is OPTIONAL and different from your current project.
応募書類の「自己紹介と現在のプロジェクト」には、必ず、あなた自身が執筆中・執筆予定の創作プロジェクトについて書いてください。申込みフォームにあるアウトリーチイベントについてのプロポーザルは「現在のプロジェクト」とは別物であり、記入は任意です。
Q: For outreach event proposals, do I need to have received an invitation from an organization in Kyoto at the time of application?
アウトリーチイベントの提案に関して、応募する時点で、京都の団体等からの招待を獲ている必要がありますか。
A: Proposals for outreach events are optional. This does not mean you have to present an invitation from Kyoto.
アウトリーチイベントは任意です。京都の団体等からの招待は必要ありません。
Q: In the application documents, do I need to write about the project I will be working on during my stay and its relationship with Kyoto? Also, do I need to write about the outreach project I will be working on in Kyoto?
応募書類に、滞在中に取り組むプロジェクトと京都との関係を書く必要がありますか。また、アウトリーチプロジェクトについても京都で取り組む予定のことを書く必要がありますか。
A: As a part of your application materials, we are asking you to write a description of your current creative writing project. This may not have to do with Kyoto. Proposals for outreach events are optional. If you have any outreach proposal while you are in Kyoto, tell us about it. An outreach project and your writing project are two different things.
応募書類には、現在取り組んでいる執筆プロジェクトについての説明を書いてください。これは京都関連のものである必要はありません。アウトリーチプロジェクトは任意です。京都滞在中にアウトリーチプロジェクトの提案がある場合は応募書類に書いてください。アウトリーチプロジェクトと執筆プロジェクトは別のものです。
Q: Does the project I will be working on during my stay have to be related to Japan or Kyoto?
滞在中に取り組むプロジェクトは、日本か京都に関係している必要がありますか。
A: You are free to write about anything you would like. Your project does not have to be about Japan or Kyoto.
書きたいものごとについて自由に書いてください。日本か京都に関係している必要はまったくありません。
On Selection Announcement 結果の発表について
Q: When will I be notified of the results?
結果の通知はいつ届きますか。
A: The results of the screening will be notified to all applicants in the end of May/beginning of June 2025.
5月末〜6月初旬に応募者全員に通知する予定です。
About the Residency レジデンシーについて
Q: Are writers only welcome in October? Can I visit your residency in other time of the year?
1年のうち、レジデンシーが行われる10-11月以外も滞在できますか。今度京都を訪れるのですが滞在できますか。
A: Kyoto Writers Residency does not own a physical building. We hold our annual residency in October only. Residency ｆellows are welcome to extend their stay on their own, but we provide our fellowship only for one month in October.
京都文学レジデンシーは年に1度10月にレジデンシーを開催しています。建物などは所有していません。レジデンシー作家は滞在を延長することができますが、フェローシップを提供するのは毎年秋の1ヶ月間のみです。
Q: How often and what kind of events will there be during my stay? Is there a cost to participate in the events? How much free time do I have?
滞在中にはどのくらいの頻度で、どのようなイベントがありますか。イベントへの参加には費用がかかりますか。どのくらい自由な時間がありますか。
A: We are hosting an opening forum and a final reading. These are the official two mandatory events. There might be other optional events at bookstores and schools and such, but we’ll ask the authors if they would like to take a part. Our residency is a studio residency, which means the majority of time spent in Kyoto is for the writers to focus on their projects.
参加必須の公式イベントは、滞在初日のオープニングフォーラム、および最終日の朗読会の2つです。書店や学校などで他のイベントがあるかもしれませんが、参加は任意です。京都文学レジデンシーはスタジオ型滞在であり、滞在期間のほとんどは作家が自由にプロジェクトに集中する時間です。
Q: Do writers have to attend all official events?
作家は公式イベント全てに必ず参加する必要がありますか。
A: We are hosting 2 official events (the opening forum and a reading) at the beginning and the end of the residency period. Resident writers will have to be able to participate the two events.
公式イベントは、滞在初日のオープニングフォーラム、および最終日の朗読会の2つで参加は必須です。
Bringing a Partner to the Residency 同行者について
Q: Can writers bring someone with them?
同行者がいる場合の対応を教えてください。
A: The accommodation provided by the organizer is a single room dormitory. Two or more people cannot stay together.
If you would like your partner and/or family members to visit Kyoto during your residency, you have a few options:
(1) If your partner will visit for a short period of time, you can reserve a room for them.
(2) If your partner will stay with you for the entire duration of the residency, you will arrange a room yourself. The organizer will reimburse you for the dormitory room fee.
Either way, you need to book early since November is one of the busiest period in Kyoto.
The residency fellowship only covers the expenses of the selected writer, i.e. it does not cover the expenses of family members or partners.
Please note that writers who live far away from other writers may have difficulty connecting with the community of resident writers.
主催者が提供する宿泊場所はシングルルームの寮です。2人以上で滞在することはできません。
滞在期間中に、パートナーや家族が京都に滞在する場合は、以下のケースが考えられます。いずれにせよ11月の京都は最繁忙期のため早めの準備が必須です。
(1) 短期間滞在する場合、ご自身で別途ホテルなどを予約してください。
(2) レジデンシー期間中一緒に滞在する場合、作家自身が部屋を手配してください。主催者が寮の部屋代に相当する金額を作家に支払います。
レジデンシーのフェローシップは、作家の費用のみをカバーし、家族やパートナーの費用はカバーしません。
また、他の作家から離れて暮らす場合、作家グループと疎遠になりがちになることはご注意ください。
